Mattel’s Mindflex toy is a one of kind game, giving users the power to play with their mind in a test control, concentration and willpower.
The game was first introduced in January 2009 at the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Association) convention. Released in October of 2009, the Mindflex toy has stunned shoppers all over the country with its incredible design. Futuristic and cutting edge, this toy uses technology which can measure a person’s theta waves. The user wears a snazzy looking headset and with their brain waves and hand-eye coordination, they essentially move a small foam ball around the console and through obstacles.

With a console fitted with several air vents, obstacles and a dial which moves the air laterally from vent to vent, the small foam ball lifts when the game measures the amount of theta waves from the brain and thus increases air output from the vent. The dial (used with the hand) then shifts the air from vent to vent.
How does it Work?
It’s quite a sight to behold. First of all, this is not a game employing telekinesis, though it’s pretty close. The Mindflex toy includes a head set which has sensors on both the temples and earlobes. These sensors measure theta waves which translate the increase in waves as increased concentration. The more brainwaves that are emitted, the more air is released through the vents; thus, lifting the ball.
To decrease lift, simply focus thoughts on something other than the ball. The theta waves decrease and the air output is reduced. Getting used to this process of concentration and hand-eye coordination can take some practice but once users successful use brain power to lift a ball, the game takes on a whole life of its own.
Game Pieces and Modes
The Mindflex toy comes with the console, headset and obstacle pieces. The obstacles include:
- A maze-like structure that requires the user to weave the ball in and out, up and down
- Canon and funnel where user can propel ball out of funnel to the adjacent side where funnel is placed
- Hoops placed at different heights
- Propeller that rotates ball from one side to another
- And much more!
There are also several game modes to choose from including:
- Freestyle (perfect for practicing)
- Mental marathon (race for lap)
- Chase the lights (Tag 4 light on console)
- Danger zone
- Thought shot (cannon and funnel)
